Para la mayoría, el uso en el teclado del ordenador de la combinación de teclas Control+C (copiar) y Control+V (pegar), así como Control+X (cortar) se ha convertido en una acción muy cotidiana, ya que es una herramienta fundamental para reestructurar una porción de texto con un comando muy sencillo, así como imágenes, vídeos… Son los atajos de teclado más básicos que existen.
Su inventor es Larry Tesler, un experto en ciencias de la computación que en la década de los 70 mientras trabajaba en el departamento de informática del Xerox PARC, un centro de innovación tecnológica con sede en Palo Alto, California (EEUU), ideó un proceso por el cual se podía capturar texto y enviarlo a una memoria interna del ordenador.
Así nacería el copy & paste como sistema para mejorar la productividad en todos los ámbitos relacionados con el ordenador.
Las primeras máquinas que integraron la posibilidad del comando copiar y pegar fueron Apple Lisa (1981) y Macintosh (1984).
